Social media bots are software agents that may perport to be real people, and generate social media content. Some are innocuous and even perhaps sueful, for example, a museum generating an "artefact of the day" autonatically from its digital archive. They may also be used for criminal purposes, such as phishing, or to subvert democratic process through deliberate misinformation.
